Medical Treatment Visa – Norway

Hassle-free visa processing for your travel needs.

Overview

If you are a citizen of a non-EU/EEA country and wish to travel to Norway to undergo medical treatment for a period exceeding 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit for medical treatment in advance.

This permit may also be granted to an accompanying person, if necessary for your care or well-being during treatment.

Important:

  • The residence permit for medical treatment can only be granted for a maximum of one year.
  • The application is free of charge.

Eligibility

To qualify for a residence permit for medical treatment, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • You have received a confirmed offer of medical treatment from a Norwegian hospital or outpatient clinic.
  • You can cover the cost of treatment either with your own funds or through public health funding from your home country.
  • The Norwegian healthcare provider confirms that your treatment will not affect local patient services.
  • You are not subject to an entry ban in Norway or the Schengen Area.
  • It is likely the treatment will be completed within one year.
  • It is likely you will leave Norway once the permit expires.

Documents Required

General Requirements

  • Signed application form or signature form from the Application Portal
  • Valid passport
  • UDI’s checklist, completed and signed
  • Translation of all documents not in Norwegian or English by an authorised or certified translator, including the translator’s name and date of translation

Medical Treatment-Specific Documents

  • Confirmation letter from a hospital or outpatient clinic in Norway offering the medical treatment
  • Proof of payment method for the treatment (e.g. personal bank statements or funding approval from a public institution in your home country)
  • Confirmation from the medical institution stating that your treatment will not negatively impact Norwegian residents’ access to healthcare
  • Estimated duration of treatment from the medical provider

If Accompanied by a Carer or Family Member

  • Statement explaining the need for accompaniment during your treatment
  • Proof of relationship (e.g. birth certificate, marriage certificate, as applicable)
  • Passport copy of the accompanying person
  • Proof of financial support covering the accompanying person’s stay in Norway

Photo Specifications

  • Provide one recent colour photograph (taken within the last 6 months).
  • The background must be light (white or off-white) to ensure facial features are clearly visible.
  • The photo must be of high clarity, with the face fully in focus.
  • The image must show a neutral expression with the full face visible.
  • No smiling, no sunglasses, and no hats or caps are permitted.
  • Head coverings are only allowed for religious or cultural reasons, but the face must be fully visible.
  • The photo must be printed on standard photographic paper (camera print).
  • Attach the photograph to the visa application form using a paper clip (do not glue or staple).

If the submitted photograph does not meet these specifications, the application will be deemed incomplete and the applicant.
