Family Reunification Visa – Norway

Overview

If you have a close family member already living in Norway, you may be eligible to join them through the Family Reunification Visa. This residence permit allows spouses, children, parents, and certain other family members to reunite and reside legally in Norway. The type of visa and requirements vary depending on your relationship and your family member’s nationality or residence status.

Who Can Apply

You may apply for family immigration if you are:

  • The spouse, cohabitant, or fiancé/fiancée of someone residing in Norway
  • child under or over 18 joining a parent or family in Norway
  • parent, foster parent, or guardian of a child residing in Norway
  • family member of an EU/EEA national residing in Norway
  • Another relative, under exceptional humanitarian grounds

Eligibility

  • The family member in Norway must hold one of the following:
    • Norwegian citizenship
    • Citizenship from another Nordic country
    • A valid residence permit in Norway (permanent or temporary that forms the basis for family immigration)
    • Citizenship from an EU/EEA country, if you’re applying for a residence card
  • Both applicant and reference person must meet specific requirements depending on the relationship
  • A valid passport is mandatory
  • The applicant must not be subject to any entry ban in Norway or the Schengen area

Common Documents

Passport

  • A valid national passport for the applicant

Application Form

  • Completed and signed application form for family immigration

Photograph

  • Recent passport-size photo of the applicant

Cover Letter

  • Signed cover letter from the online application portal

Relationship Documentation

  • Proof of relationship with the family member in Norway (e.g. marriage certificate, birth certificate, adoption papers)

Proof of Accommodation

  • Confirmation of housing arrangements in Norway (rental agreement, ownership deed, or hosting confirmation)

UK Residency

  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Proof of Finance

Income Requirement for the Reference Person

  • Proof that the family member in Norway has an income of at least NOK 396,890 per year (pre-tax)
  • Income documentation may include:
    • Tax returns
    • Employment contract and payslips
    • Financial guarantee if applicable

Exemptions

  • Some applicants may be exempt from income requirements (e.g. family of refugees within specified deadlines)

Additional Documents by Relationship Type

Spouse or Registered Partner

  • Marriage certificate
  • Confirmation of joint plans to live in Norway
  • Proof that marriage is genuine and not of convenience
  • Both must be 24 years or older

Cohabitant

  • Proof of having lived together for at least 2 years, or
  • Birth certificate of a joint child
  • Both must be 24 years or older

Fiancé(e) / Person Getting Married

  • Confirmation of marriage plans within 6 months
  • Statement confirming genuine engagement
  • Both must be 24 years or older

Child Under 18

  • Birth certificate
  • Parental consent if only one parent resides in Norway
  • Adoption documents (if applicable)

Child Over 18

  • Proof of previous residence in Norway (if applicable)
  • Medical documents (for health-related dependency)
  • Proof that the child is not married or self-supporting

Parent (Joining Child Under 18)

  • Birth certificate of the child
  • Confirmation of parental responsibility
  • Residence permit history

Parent (Joining Child Over 18)

  • Birth certificate of the child
  • Applicant must be over 60, and not have close family in their home country

Parent Visiting for Up to 9 Months

  • Proof of temporary visit purpose
  • Return ticket and intent to leave Norway
  • Income and accommodation documents

Foster Child

  • Proof of legal guardianship
  • Confirmation from child welfare authorities in Norway

Child with Sibling in Norway

  • Proof that parents are deceased or unavailable
  • Sibling’s residence permit and income documentation
  • Child welfare approval in Norway

Other Family Members

  • Case-specific documents to prove humanitarian grounds or exceptional dependency

Family Members of Norwegian or Nordic Citizens

Provide the same category-based documents listed above, with an additional emphasis on:

  • Proof of Norwegian/Nordic citizenship of the reference person
  • Norwegian marriage certificate (if married abroad, ensure it’s legally recognised in Norway)

Residence Card for Family Members of EU/EEA Nationals

Spouses / Cohabitants

  • Marriage or cohabitation documentation
  • Proof of having lived together in another EU/EEA country

Children and Grandchildren

  • Birth certificate
  • Proof of dependency (for over 21)

Parents and Grandparents

  • Proof of financial dependency
  • Documents proving the family member resided with the reference person in another EU/EEA country

Other Family Members (Foster Children, Household Members)

  • Health insurance coverage
  • Housing guarantee
  • Documents confirming care dependency

Photo Specifications

  • Provide one recent colour photograph (taken within the last 6 months).
  • The background must be light (white or off-white) to ensure facial features are clearly visible.
  • The photo must be of high clarity, with the face fully in focus.
  • The image must show a neutral expression with the full face visible.
  • No smilingno sunglasses, and no hats or caps are permitted.
  • Head coverings are only allowed for religious or cultural reasons, but the face must be fully visible.
  • The photo must be printed on standard photographic paper (camera print).
  • Attach the photograph to the visa application form using a paper clip (do not glue or staple).

If the submitted photograph does not meet these specifications, the application will be deemed incomplete and the applicant.
